(unit 1)_ CHANGES IN MATTER AND TYPES OF CHANGES

PHYSICAL CHANGES*

The susbstance changes* but matter does NOT change.

Ex: water freezes*, but it is still water

CHEMICAL CHANGES

New substances are created and matter changes.

Ex: Wood changes into ashes* and gases when it burns.

TYPES OF CHANGES

  • Irreversible: matter CANNOT RETURN to its original state.
  • Reversible: matter CAN RETURN to its original state.

*change: canvi
*to change: canviar
*to freeze: congelar
*ash: cendra

(unit 1)_ TYPES OF MATTER

  • PURE SUBSTANCES cannot be separated into other substances. Examples: iron, salt

  • MIXED SUBSTANCES are made of two or more substances. Seawater* is a mixture of water and salt

*Sea: mar
Water: aigua
Seawater: aigua de la mar

( UNIT 1)_MASS, VOLUME AND DENSITY

Matter has two general properties:

  • Mass is the amount* of matter in an object. We can measure* it in kilos.
  • Volume is the space that an object occupies. We can measure it in litres.

Density is the relationship between mass and volume:

                                             Density=mass/volume

*amount: quantitat
*to measure: mesurar

(unit 1)_DESCRIPTION OF AN OBJECT

1. Firstly, you have to write what it is.
2. Secondly, write the main material it is made of.
3. Finally, write the properties that you can observe or measure.

Here you have the example we did together:

(What is it?)This is a picture.
(Main material)It's made of wood.
(Properties)It isn't transparent, it's opaque. It's flat and rough. It's hard and stiff. It's not magnetic and it's insulator.
It's a square, it's 20 cm long and 20 cm wide. It weighs 22 g and it's colourful!

INSTRUCTIONS

TIPS TO READ AN INSTRUCTION MANUAL

·      Please, read all the instructions carefully before starting

If objects manipulation is dangerous, ask an adult for help

If you find any difficulty, try it until you do it well

Work in a comfortable and tidy place

Bring all the materials that you need

Follow all the steps carefully

Keep the instructions close to you

(unit 1)_LIFE PROCESSES

People* are living things*

LIFE PROCESSES

1. NUTRITION: we need food* to have energy

             SYSTEMS; digestive, respiratory, circulatory, excretory

2. SENSITIVITY

The SENSES* give us information about the world

3. REPRODUCTION

             People have CHILDREN*
